Not helping myself here I know but.....

Not sky

untitled. oil on canvas. 116x92cms. I have made several paintings in the last couple of years that look like skies but have not been intended to look that way, hence Not sky in the title to this post. They are the result of layering but it is hard to convince people that the allusion has not been intentional. They are purely abstract. This next one too. oil on canvas. 116x92cms. I would, like Barbara Kingsolver has said, want to be working at the edge of my powers and hope that that edge could be shifted outwards. Maybe that can be achieved, maybe not but trying is very much the thing to want to do.

What painting can be.

hedge with blue tape. oil on canvas. 116x 92 cms I think it can serve as a dialogue: me, it, it, me. Whilst looking one is painting and the two activities are in a relationship in which  there are questions to be asked. So I have given this a particular title so that it can start to be read. Is it helpful ? The painting proceeded without any thought to it. In fact the painting is made by looking over and over at the space outside my workroom but at the same time I am working close to the surface of the painting and so looking closely at the mark making which is happening in front of me and I am so concentrated on that that I don't notice the whole until later.
